Tips for Dealing with Unscrupulous Fundraisers

If you’re unsure about an organization, you can always contact us by email. Please include a scan or photo of any invoices you’ve received, as well as any other relevant information.

Here are some common complaints we’ve received in the past, along with our advice on how to handle them:

I have received an invoice or a reminder, but I don’t recall having explicitly agreed to support the organization / I regret making a donation.

First and foremost, you should contact the organization. Explain that you wish to withdraw your contribution—or, if applicable, that you do not recall agreeing to provide support—and ask that the charge be removed. Refer to your customer number or invoice number if these are provided. If the organization refuses to cancel the claim, you can contact us by email.

If the invoice specifies some form of purchase or sale—for example, “Purchase of a symbolic product”—you may exercise your right of withdrawal. A withdrawal form must be included with the invoice you received. You then have a two-week withdrawal period. If the right-of-withdrawal form was not included, the withdrawal period is three months.

Regardless of whether the claim concerns a gift or a purchase, and if you wish to withdraw your contribution—whether or not you have the right of withdrawal—contact the organization and ask them to provide documentation proving that you gave your consent. If they do not, they must cancel the claim. In such cases, Charity Monitoring Norway can provide tips and advice on how to proceed and how to phrase your request.

I was a regular donor, but I’m still receiving demands for payment.

In that case, you should contact the organization and make sure that the agreement has been canceled on their end. If you’ve only canceled the automatic payment in your online banking, you’ll likely receive an invoice when the automatic payment doesn’t go through. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, please contact us.

I have received calls from telemarketers despite having opted out of telemarketing.

In that case, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Agency.

Nonprofit organizations are permitted by law to contact former donors three years after the donor relationship ends. This applies even if you have opted out of receiving telemarketing calls from nonprofits. Note that the Consumer Authority considers that a single donation does not establish an “existing customer relationship.” There must be a certain pattern of giving—such as a previous recurring donation agreement or several sporadic one-time donations over the years—before they can contact you based on a prior donor relationship.

If necessary, contact the organization and specify that you wish to opt out of receiving communications from it.

I have received some suspicious notes about a clothing drive.

I suspect that an organization is using the donations it receives for purposes other than those intended.
